50th District State Senator Sam McCann (R-Carlinville) visited students at Chatham Elementary School on Wednesday, February 25th, to discuss legislation he filed at the request of the students. Senate Bill 800 (SB800) would name sweet corn as the official vegetable of the State of Illinois.
“It’s amazing that these young minds are so engaged in state government to actually propose legislation,” said Sen. McCann. “I’ve always said that the world is run by those who show up. These kids are showing up early.”
Senator McCann updated the students on the progress of the legislation, and explained in detail the process that all legislation must go through to achieve passage. The Senator also fielded questions from students concerned about potential problems that SB800 might face, including the issue of whether sweet corn qualifies as a vegetable for the designation.
“I would have expected these questions from much older students,” said Senator McCann. “Their knowledge of state government, grasp of the issues, and demeanor say great things about the teachers, school administrators, and families in this district.”
