State Sen. Dave Luechtefeld (R-Okawville) offered the following comments after Senator Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill) rolled out his new proposal for education funding “reform,” Senate Bill 1.
“It’s still early to thoroughly evaluate Senator Manar’s proposal, particularly until the Illinois State Board of Education is able to provide a district-by-district breakdown of funding. We certainly are going to keep an open mind,” Luechtefeld said. “The situation is a little different this year because Governor Bruce Rauner’s administration will obviously have a great deal of input on this topic and he has said he's committed to improving K – 12 education. I'm focused on maintaining strong local control and working towards a fairer funding of education.”
Luechtefeld said he was interested in learning more about the new “regionalization” for the state-aid formula concept that is being introduced in the bill.
As the Senate Republican point person on educational issues, Luechtefeld was cautious to offer an in-depth analysis of the 437-page bill until a comprehensive analysis has been completed.
